Choosing Your Roll Out Grass: Emerald Elite, Standard or Budget
Roll out grass, also called lawn turf, grass rolls or roll on grass, is cultivated grass lifted from the field in rolls and laid as an instant lawn. You may also hear it called sod.
We offer three grades of cultivated lawn turf for Galway delivery:
Emerald Elite — Our best-selling grade. A harder-wearing, lower-maintenance lawn turf supplied virtually free from broad-leaved weeds and coarse grass weeds. Closer-mown with a denser sward and lighter rolls. The grade we recommend for most Galway homeowners — front gardens, family lawns, or anywhere quality and ease of maintenance matter.
Emerald Standard — A durable regular blend of grasses providing a good-quality sward for everyday use. Requires standard year-round lawn maintenance. A solid choice for most domestic Galway gardens.
Emerald Budget — Good value where budget is the priority. Quality is variable but provides an instant green result. Minimum order 51 square metres — best suited to larger projects such as new-build developments in Galway city and Oranmore.

Galway Soil and Weather: Preparing for Your New Lawn
Ground conditions change a lot across Co. Galway, so it helps to know what you are laying lawn turf on. Gardens in the east of the county, around Athenry, Loughrea and Ballinasloe, are generally on farmland soil, while ground in Connemara and the west can be wetter and more peaty. In the city, and in suburbs such as Knocknacarra, Doughiska and Oranmore, many gardens are on new-build plots.
Galway also gets more rain than Dublin, so a new lawn may need watering less often. It still needs to be kept moist until it has rooted, and watered in dry spells. Lawn turf can be laid at any time of year, provided the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. For local climate figures, see Met Éireann's climate pages, and for soil types across the county, see Teagasc's soil information.
What this means for your new lawn:
- On new-build plots, expect compacted ground and buried rubble. Remove the rubble, cultivate the soil and add screened topsoil where needed.
- On wet or poorly drained ground, cultivate first to improve drainage, and do not lay while the ground is waterlogged.
- On lighter, free-draining soil, add organic matter and water regularly while the lawn establishes.

Lawn Turf for Galway's New Homes and Gardens
Many new homes in and around Galway city, including in Knocknacarra, Doughiska and Oranmore, come with bare, compacted ground and a garden that needs a lawn quickly. Lawn turf gives homeowners and developers a finished lawn straight away, and ours is grown on light, stone-free soil that suits the varied ground found on new-build sites.
We also supply landscapers and developers across Co. Galway, and have supplied professional-grade lawn turf to landmark venues including Lansdowne Road in Dublin and the K Club in Co. Kildare.
Frequently Asked Questions About Lawn Turf in Galway
Where in Co. Galway do you deliver lawn turf?
We deliver fresh lawn turf and roll out grass throughout Co. Galway. In the city, that includes Salthill, Knocknacarra, Renmore, Mervue, Doughiska and Ballybane. In the east of the county, we deliver to Oranmore, Athenry, Loughrea, Ballinasloe, Tuam and Headford. In the south, we deliver to Gort, Kinvara and Portumna. We also deliver across Connemara, from Moycullen and Oughterard to Clifden and Roundstone. Our lawn turf is grown on our own farm in Co. Derry and cut to order.
It is delivered on pallets by heavy goods lorry, with a tail lift and a manual pallet truck, to the closest suitable point to your address. The price you see online already includes delivery. To order, start online, select Galway from the county map, enter the area you need and choose a grade. You do not need to commit to buy to see your price.
Is wet weather a problem when laying lawn turf in Galway?
Wet weather is not a problem in itself, but waterlogged ground is. Galway gets more rain than Dublin, so a new lawn may need watering less often than one in a drier part of the country. Even so, newly laid lawn turf must be kept moist until it has rooted, and it needs extra water in dry spells. Do not lay lawn turf on ground that is waterlogged or frozen.
On wet or poorly drained ground, cultivate the soil first to improve drainage, and wait until the surface is workable. Lawn turf can be laid at any time of year, so a wet spell is a reason to wait a few days, not to wait for a different season. Our How to Care for Your New Lawn guide explains what to do after laying.
Which grade of lawn turf suits a Galway garden?
For most Galway gardens, we recommend Emerald Elite. It is our best-selling grade and it is exclusive to Emerald Lawns. It is harder wearing and lower maintenance, with a closer-mown, denser sward and lighter rolls. It is supplied virtually free from broad-leaved weeds and coarse grass weeds, so it suits front gardens and family lawns.
Emerald Standard is a regular blend of grasses with a durable sward. Its uniformity of texture varies, and it needs the year-round maintenance of an ordinary lawn.
Emerald Budget is good value if budget is your priority. Its quality is variable, but it gives an instant green result. The minimum order is 51 square metres, so it suits larger projects such as new-build developments in Galway city and Oranmore.
To compare the three, select Galway online and look at the delivered price for each grade.
How much does lawn turf delivery to Galway cost?
Delivery to Galway is included in the price you see online. Prices are shown in euro plus VAT, and the basket shows your subtotal, VAT and total before you pay. The total depends on the grade you choose and the quantity you order. To see your price, go to our buy lawn turf page, select Galway, enter your quantity and compare Emerald Elite, Emerald Standard and Emerald Budget.
You do not need to commit to buy to see it. You can order up to 200 square metres online, which is 190 square metres plus the 5% allowance. For larger quantities, please email us. An extra charge of €70 per pallet applies if a delivery has to be rescheduled because the address is incorrect or access is not suitable. This is set out in our Terms and Conditions.
Can I choose my delivery date?
Yes. You choose your delivery date at checkout, from the dates shown when you place your order online. We cannot specify a time of delivery, and your roll out grass may arrive late in the day. If you want to lay it first thing in the morning, choose the day before. To ask for an estimated arrival time, reply to your order confirmation email on the morning of your scheduled delivery date.
Please make sure the delivery point has a smooth, solid, level surface for the pallet truck. If you need to change or cancel an order, send your request in writing to info@emeraldlawns.ie by 5pm two working days before your chosen delivery date. We do not accept changes by telephone. Prepare your ground before delivery day, so that you can start laying the lawn turf as soon as it arrives.
How much roll out grass do I need for my garden?
Measure the area you want to cover, then let our online tools do the sums. The Lawn Calculator lets you enter up to four separate lawn areas. It then works out your square metres and adds 5% for cutting and shaping. If you already know your area, use the Quantity tab instead. We recommend that you add at least 5% for tolerances. You can order up to 200 square metres online.
For larger quantities, please email us. Emerald Budget has a minimum order of 51 square metres. If you are not sure how to measure an awkward shape or a sloping garden, our Lawn Measuring Guide shows you how. Then select Galway and enter your quantity to see your full delivered price. It is better to order a little more than you need than to run short on the day.
Can I lay lawn turf in Galway in winter?
Yes. You can lay lawn turf at any time of year, provided the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. In winter, root growth is slower, so you will need to wait a little longer before you use your new lawn. There is less risk of the grass drying out, but you should still keep newly laid lawn turf moist until it has rooted. Check the ground before delivery day.
If the soil is frozen, or if it is so wet that water pools on the surface, you may need to change your delivery date, and changes must reach us in writing by 5pm two working days before the date you chose. Lawn turf is a perishable product that is harvested fresh to order, so lay it as soon as possible after it arrives, whatever the season.
How should I prepare my ground before the grass rolls arrive?
Start by clearing the area of weeds and debris. Cultivate the soil to relieve compaction, then level it and lightly firm it so the grass rolls sit on an even surface. On a new-build plot, expect compacted ground and buried rubble. Remove the rubble and add screened topsoil where it is needed. On wet or poorly drained ground, cultivate first to improve drainage.
On lighter, free-draining soil, add organic matter and plan to water regularly while the lawn establishes. Do not lay lawn turf on frozen or waterlogged ground. Finish this work before delivery day, because lawn turf should be laid as soon as possible after it arrives. Also check that the delivery point has a smooth, solid, level surface for the pallet truck. Our How to Create a Perfect Lawn guide covers each step in order.
What if my driveway is gravel or access is difficult?
Our lawn turf is delivered on pallets by heavy goods lorry, with a tail lift and a manual pallet truck. The pallet truck only works on a smooth, solid, level surface, such as tarmac, concrete or block paving. It does not work on gravel, grass, steps or uneven ground. If your driveway is gravel or uneven, your pallets will be left at the kerbside.
The driver off-loads at the closest suitable and safe point to your address. Please check your access before you order, and tell us about any problem when you place your order. If a delivery has to be rescheduled because access is not suitable, an extra charge of €70 per pallet applies. This is set out in our Terms and Conditions. If you cannot move the pallets yourself, arrange some help for delivery day.
Is lawn turf better than grass seed for a Galway garden?
Lawn turf gives you a finished lawn straight away, and it can establish roots in around two to three weeks under good growing conditions. A seeded lawn takes considerably longer before it can tolerate regular foot traffic. Many new-build gardens in Galway city and Oranmore have compacted soil and buried rubble, which makes even seed germination difficult. Lawn turf also suppresses weed growth.
It does need more work on the day, because the pallets arrive and the rolls must be laid quickly. Seed is a slower route, and the result depends heavily on the weather and the soil. Whichever route you choose, prepare the ground well first, because that decides the result more than anything else. If you want to compare the two properly, read our lawn turf rolls versus seeding a lawn guide, then choose a grade online to see your delivered price.
